MGM Springfield unveils ice rink, holiday marketplace

Hampden County

“Holidays at MGM Springfield” kicked off earlier Friday.

The casino transformed into a winter wonderland with an ice rink, holiday marketplace, and plenty of jolly decor for the grand opening of Holidays at MGM Springfield.

And there was a special guest, U.S. National Figure Skating Champion Nancy Kerrigan.

Guests at the event are able to enjoy complimentary ice skating until 10 p.m. Friday night and can watch a community tree lighting ceremony that starts after 6:30 p.m. And after the tree lighting, you can meet Santa Claus for a photo.

“So it will be here all winter,” said Michael Mathis, MGM Springfield president. “And it will be an annual event that we put on and it really activates the plaza. We’ve got Kringle Candle Emporium next door, and then we’ve got their Christmas store in the Armory. So a lot of great things.”

And the Armory is also taking part in the holiday fun, becoming Kringle’s Christmas Emporium a holiday shop with Kringle and Country Candle gifts.

You can shop at Kringle’s Christmas Emporium until December 26.

There was also a tree-lighting ceremony.

The 38-foot tall LED tree was illuminated for the holidays Friday evening. It’s has hundreds of lights, displaying a light show that plays holiday music.

Mayor Domenic Sarno helped light the tree Friday night while hundreds gathered at the MGM Plaza to watch.

And of course, you can’t get into the Christmas spirit without an appearance from Santa Claus himself.  He was here taking pictures with kids.

“We’re here with family friends so we’re here just to celebrate the holiday and to enjoy the event,” said Angelina Carando of East Longmeadow. “It’s really great, it’s very pretty.”

The ice rink at MGM plaza presented by Mercedes-Benz of Springfield is open from now until March 3.

The rink will be open at the following times:

  • Monday – Thursday: 2 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Friday: 2 p.m – 10 p.m
  • Saturday: 12 p.m – 10 p.m
  • Sunday: 12 p.m – 9 p.m
