There’s a new air of excitement in the City of Springfield after MGM announced a new, earlier opening date Thursday.
MGM said they’ll open for business on August 24, just about a month earlier than previous estimates.
MGM’s crediting the good weather for their accelerated construction schedule and completing the project early.
The company’s promising to have a 125,000 square-foot gaming floor, as well as world-class shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.
“We’ve got a great steakhouse, a beautiful 250-room hotel, well over 2,500 slots, 93 tables, a poker room, bowling, dining, a full integrative experience here in downtown Springfield,” Alex Dixon, general manager of MGM Springfield told 22News.
Thursday’s announcement came just one day after rumors were put to rest that MGM had considered buying Wynn Resorts casino at the other end of the state.
MGM Springfield told 22News they’re completely invested in Springfield. And now the focus turns to the thousands of jobs that the casino will create.
MGM said they hope to have another 2,300 jobs filled by mid-summer.
The casino’s hosting two mass hiring events next month, and another in June.
