Mulch around your home can be a fire hazard

Hampden County

Firefighters are reminding residents that mulch outside of your home can be easily combustible.

Lieutenant Katie Collins-Kalbaugh of the Chicopee Fire Department told 22News that mulch can be easily ignited, and taking precautions like properly disposing of smoking materials can help ensure a fire doesn’t land in mulch and spark a fire.

Lt. Collins-Kalbaugh added that there are regulations in place that homeowners should be following,

“There are certain regulations that apply to houses made of combustible exteriors,” Lt. Collins-Kalbaugh said. “Such as vinyl siding, or wood frame housing. What you want to do is have the mulch at least 18 inches away from any combustible exteriors.”

Mulch fires are also more readily started when the weather is dry and hot.
