This is Springfield Navy week that included a Navy Band concert at Forest Park Wednesday, and a visit to the Ronald McDonald House Thursday.
It’s a home away from home for upwards of 150 parents each year, permitting them to stay close to their children being treated at Baystate Medical Center and Shriners Children’s Hospital.
Thursday, Navy Lt. John Stevens looks in on a young mother whose newborn has required additional treatment.
“We do 15 or so navy weeks a year in communities that don’t typically get a lot of navy exposure,” said Lt. Stevens. “That’s really our mission with outreach, to educate Americans what the navy is doing for you around the clock every day.”
The Navy Band will also perform Saturday on the grounds of the Springfield Armory.
