The Spirit of Springfield announced the new location for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks Thursday morning.
The fireworks are being moved to Blunt Park, which is in the city’s Bay neighborhood off Roosevelt Avenue.
Blunt park is said to be three times the size of Riverfront Park which is unavailable for the 4th fireworks this year because of major renovations underway there.
The Spirit of Springfield’s Judy Matt is certain thousands of people will view the fireworks from Blunt Park’s many vantage points.
“This is our residents’ holiday and we want to make it the best for them,” Matt told 22News. “Come down and really enjoy and give them a first-class program.”
Riverfront Park is the traditional spot for the 4th of July festivities, but that park is currently closed due to a major renovation project.
“It’s an exciting time in our Springfield with numerous economic development and construction projects/initiatives going on throughout our whole city,” Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said. “So with the Riverfront going through a rebirth – ‘the show must go on’ for this year at Blunt Park.”
Blunt Park is easily accessible from Interstate 291, being located in Springfield’s Bay neighborhood on Roosevelt Avenue adjoining Central High School.
“This is a temporary move, as we come to Blunt Park,” said Mayor Sarno. “Do you remember not too long ago the 375th birthday of the City of Springfield we held an event right here at Blunt Park.
Matt said there will more than enough parking space available.
The police, fire and park departments have pledged to do whatever’s necessary to accommodate the thousands expected to enjoy the Springfield’s Fourth of July fireworks.
The Star Spangled Springfield festivities at Blunt Park will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on July 4. The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.
The Spirit of Springfield has been presenting Star Spangled Springfield since 1991.
