Nuns raising money to repair Monastery in West Springfield

Hampden County

The Mother of God Monastery has sat overlooking Riverdale Street for more than half a century. But the beautiful building’s age is catching up with it.

The discovery of a leak in the basement has led to mold, and the need to replace the exterior piping surrounding the building.

The Monastery’s bell tower is also in need of serious structural repair. As the cost began to climb, lay members of the Mother of God Chapter made a pitch to put up a GoFundMe page.

Sister Mary of the Immaculate Heart, the Monastery’s Prioress said, “They asked if we would like the Dominican Lay to go with it. And we said well if you can do it! Because it was so beyond what I could manage.”

Sister Mary said insurance wasn’t able to cover the cost of the renovations, and if the issue isn’t addressed, it could compromise the foundation. Some renovations have begun, and the lay members moved forward with the GoFundMe page three months ago.

So far, they raised less than $1,500 of their $145,000 goal, but the nuns said they feel blessed by the support.

Sister Mary of the Sacred Heart, who helps oversee the building’s maintenance, said, “Relief and gratitude, and hope. Just because it was just so enormous.”
