One person dead, one injured after shooting in Palmer

Hampden County

Police are calling Saturday night’s shooting in the Thorndike section of Palmer accidental.

According to Hampden District Attorney Office Spokesperson Jim Leydon, at approximately 10:15 p.m. Palmer police received reports of a woman with a gunshot wound at 311 River Street.

According to police, the 21-year-old woman said her boyfriend accidently shot her in the back while he was unloading his firearm.

The woman was treated and taken to Baystate Medical Center.

Leydon said officers found the woman’s 24-year-old boyfriend with a gunshot wound to the head while the woman was being treated by EMTs.

Leydon said it appeared as though the man shot and killed himself.

The incident is currently being investigated by Palmer Police and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s office.
