Operational changes resulting in layoffs at Providence Hospital in Holyoke

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Providence Behavioral Health Hospital in Holyoke is reducing the size of its workforce, which may involve layoffs.

22News obtained a copy of a notice sent out by Mercy Medical Center President Mark Fulco this week. In it, Fulco said Providence Behavioral Health Hospital was restructuring certain services, involving the elimination of a number of union and non-union positions.

Trinity Health Spokeswoman Mary Orr sent 22News a release confirming "operational changes and layoffs."

These operational changes include the elimination of some full and part-time positions at the hospital.

"We deeply regret that this reduction of positions is necessary,” Amy Ashford, Director of Marketing and Communications, Mercy Medical Center and its affiliates stated in the news release. “The decision to implement a restructuring and redesign of the care model and reduce staff at Providence Behavioral Health Hospital was extremely difficult to make. However, this workforce reduction will allow us to steward our resources, 'right size' our staff to our current state and allow us to continue providing outstanding behavioral health services to the local community."

The news release also states in part, “it is not possible to provide an exact number of colleagues who will be impacted by this reduction in force.”

Providence Behavioral Health Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care and treatment for substance use disorder.

Orr told 22News they hoped to place a majority of the impacted colleagues in other positions.
