Over 200 people expected to attend cancer survivor’s program

Hampden County

Hundreds of western Massachusetts cancer survivors are about to learn how to improve their quality of life.

Springfield physician Dr. Jay Burton, a cancer survivor himself, will present a program at the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday morning called Cancer Survivorship 101.

Dr. Burton told 22News that, regardless of the type of cancer survivors have, they face specific issues common to each of them.

“Fatigue, sleep issues, nutritional issues, what kind of exercise to do, the fear and anxiety regarding cancer recurrence,” Dr. Burton explained. “And if you’re still working, the whole quagmire of of what is disability law and insurance.”

220 cancer survivors have signed up for the initial program. It will be held on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Dr. Burton hope to reach many more during subsequent programs.
