Polar Vortex Challenge held at Hot Table to benefit Springfield Rescue Mission

Hampden County

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s become a Springfield tradition to enjoy lunch at Hot Table on one of the most frigid days of the year.

The wind chill made the downtown Springfield temperature feel well below zero for the lunch crowd at the Hot Table restaurant patio Monday afternoon.

This was the fourth year the restaurant owners, John and Chris DeVoie, provided a free lunch for hearty souls who were willing to brave the cold.

“Actually John came up with the idea,” Chris DeVoie said. “We were talking about the weather and everybody was talking about the polar vortex, how much fun it would be to have people sit in the patio, eat lunch.”

It’s all for a worthy cause. Hot Table donates what would have been the cost of the lunches to the Springfield Rescue Mission. Monday’s donation is expected to equal if not surpass the$1,500 donated to the Rescue Mission a year ago.
