Explosive device found inside Agawam home

Hampden County

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Police were assisted by multiple agencies when they removed and detonated an explosive device found inside a home on Suffield Street early Thursday morning.

According to Agawam Police Chief Eric Gillis, officers were initially called for a dispute at the home at around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. While the officers were questioning the individuals involved in the dispute, they noticed what looked like “military-grade items.”

The Agawam Police Department told 22News a few nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Suffield Street was temporarily closed between Mill Street and Silver Street but has since reopened.

Chief Gillis said both parties gave police conflicting reports on whether the “military-grade items” were active or inactive. Agawam Fire Department, and Massachusetts State Police personnel assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, and Bomb Squad were all called in to assist with the investigation.

The explosive device was taken to the Tuckahoe Turf property located off of South West Street in the Feeding Hills section of Agawam, where it was successfully destroyed in a controlled detonation. No one was hurt.
