Eversource spokesman David Branda said an equipment malfunction caused the massive outage. Springfield Police announced shortly before 9 p.m. that a transformer had exploded on Dwight Road, affecting thousands of electrical customers in the city.

Power was restored for most customers within an hour of the outage and some customers had to wait a little longer for their power to return.
