Power restored after transformer explosion in Springfield

The power’s back on for thousands of Springfield residents after a transformer explosion Thursday night.

The transformer blew, plunging nearly five thousand homes into darkness.

The transformer malfunctioned on the 1200 block of Wilbraham Road shortly before 7:00 p.m. Thursday night, impacting traffic lights.

Springfield Police were directing traffic until the DPW could put up stop signs at busy intersections like this one at Breckwood Boulevard and Wilbraham Road, not far from Western New England University.

The Eversource Outage Map initially had as many as 4,700 customers without power.

By 9:20 p.m. Thursday night, Everyone had their power back
