Preparations continued on Thursday for the upcoming World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast in Springfield.
Gleason Johndrow landscaping crews spent the day cleaning up Court Square. It’s the second year the city has hired the western Massachusetts landscaper in advance of the event that runs down Main Street.
Hours before the breakfast begins on Saturday morning, this crew will be there again.
“We’ll be setting up tables, doing whatever’s to come,” Tony Gleason explained. “Get this event going, coordinating through the whole process.”
Feeding the thousands of expected attendees requires a lot of planning and preparation.
Sheriff Nick Cocchi and MGM Springfield General Manager Alex Dixon are the event’s honorary co-chairs. Sheriff’s Cocchi’s dad will also take a turn at the grill.
Mercy Medical Center’s culinary crew will prepare 500 gallons of batter for the pancakes on Friday, as well as nearly a thousand pounds of bacon.
The Spirit of Springfield’s Judy Matt told 22News that kids are invited from across the Pioneer Valley.
“We’ve had over 100 requests [for tickets] from schools,” Matt explained. “We’ve had a lot of individual people saying, ‘can you get them for our kids?’ And certainly, when we get any requests, we fulfill it.”
With a table stretching nearly 2,000 feet down Main street, the city certainly hopes the event will live up to its reputation as the world’s largest pancake breakfast.
Breakfast is served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
