The Puerto Rican flag was raised at Carlos Vega Park in South Holyoke on Wednesday afternoon.
It’s the second year the city has recognized Holyoke’s Puerto Rican Cultural District. Neighborhood families came to celebrate the significance of having their own cultural district.
Nelson Roman, the Executive Director of Nueva Esperanza “Two years ago we started this tradition of raising our Puerto Rican flag to really honor and show the local community here—who are sometimes the most impoverished and the most down—that we are vibrant, we are powerful and we are here.”
Nelson Roman said he’s proud that Holyoke’s population is 49 percent Puerto Rican.
