Recent Springfield high school graduates test hands-on skills at STEM program

Hampden County

Dozens of recent Springfield area high school graduates learned the extent of their creative abilities on Friday.

The students entering Springfield Technical Community College in the fall are being recruited into the STEM Starter Academy Program.

They will hopefully choose courses towards degrees in science, technology, engineering or math.

By building a suspension bridge in little more than 90 minutes, they developed confidence in their STEM skills.

“Building the bridge means we’re all united, taking part in one big project,” said Charlene Dominguez, who recently graduated Springfield Central High School. “Knowing they’re welcoming their family in.”

It’s been five years since STCC began its active STEM recruitment program with summer projects testing students and their hands on abilities.
