The Red Cross needs your help locally and across the country.
The Red Cross is suffering from a severe blood shortage and they’re now enlisting the public’s help.
The Red Cross came up 21,000 donations short for blood and platelet collections during September and October. They’re blaming Hurricanes Michael and Florence for halting blood drives and canceling thousands of donation drives.
And with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, they lose several additional donation days.
“Everyday, nationwide, we have to collect 13,000 pints of whole blood just to meet the needs of our hospitals and 2,600 platelets,” said Ana Parrelli, district manager at the Red Cross in Springfield. “It’s a lot and it’s really a community responsibility so we’re really appealing to that community.”
One hour of your time and a pint of blood can help save three people’s lives. Since the Red Cross also supplies blood to hospitals, it’s critical they always have blood available.
