After six years of planning and construction, MGM Springfield will be opening on Friday.
“We got a new neighbor, they’re throwing a party, let’s all go and be happy for them,” said Steve Weiner of Longmeadow. “I’m sure MGM will be a wonderful neighbor, and we’re all welcoming them to our beautiful community.”
The big grand opening weekend is expected to draw many people to the area, and there will be road closures and parking restrictions starting on Friday morning.
“I feel like they are going to be well-prepared for it,” said Ryan Jones from Springfield. “I feel like they are going to make sure everything is under control.”
There are signs already up on I-91 and Route 57 in Agawam to remind drivers of the expected traffic.
Street closures include Main Street from Court Street to Union Street, and State Street from MGM Way to Dwight Street.
Exit 6 on both I-91 North and South will be shut down beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday until 4 p.m.
One man told 22 news he thinks traffic will get worse, but it’s worth it in his opinion.
“There’s excitement coming to the city,” said Johnny Diaz of Worcester. “There hasn’t been too much around here for a long time.”
For those who want to avoid driving in Springfield altogether on Friday, free parking is available at the Big E and includes a shuttle to MGM.
Connecticut visitors can also take the CT Rail Hartford line into Union Station.
