For the thousands of Orthodox Christian worshippers in western Massachusetts, this is their Easter weekend.
The faithful at Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Church in East Longmeadow prepared for Friday evenings service of the Lamentation, the Holy Friday evening service.
The Reverend Father Panteleimon Klostri told 22News, why the Orthodox Easter Sunday is observed April 8.
“The calendar that the orthodox church follows for Easter, based on the Julian calendar and according to this calendar, solidified for the date of Easter by the first Ecumenical council in the 4th century, the orthodox church follows the convention,” said Father Klostri. “First Sunday after the first full moon, the vernal Equinox on the calendar.”
During some years, greater Springfield’s nine Orthodox churches observe Easter the same weekend as the other Christian Churches.
Other years, the observances are as much as six weeks apart.
