Secret Santa paying off layaway bills at Springfield Walmart

Hampden County

22News has confirmed that at least one Secret Santa appeared at the Springfield Walmart helping shoppers pay off their layaway bills.

Walmart spokeswoman Tara Aston told 22News, benefactors appear anonymously this time of year, paying off shoppers layaway purchases.

Aston said not only did the Secret Santa pay money towards shoppers’ layaway bills but also paid for some customers’ groceries and electronics.

One shopper told 22News, she would dearly love meeting a Secret Santa.

“It would be a blessing,” Mercedes Mejia said. “People nowadays don’t have somebody to help out, so that’s a miracle, that’s a complete miracle. You don’t find people who bless others in that way.”

A Walmart spokesman said Secret Santas normally surface with their generous giving this week because layaways traditionally end on the 10th of December.

“I think it’s great around the holiday season for people that have it to chip in and help out,” said Tara Little of Springfield. “Probably cut a lot of slack off of their backs. You know it’s hard around this time for people. We’ll see this a little more often maybe, I hope so.”

22News tried to get in touch with the man who made it all happen, but it appears he wants to remain anonymous.
