The 64th annual Shrine Circus returns, opening its three day, five performance engagement Thursday night at the Eastern States Collesium Thursday evening.The Shrine Circus will put on a VIP show for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Wednesday afternoon.
According to a news release sent to 22News the circus will perform for patients, families, and staff in the courtyard of the hospital at 2 p.m.
Performers thrilled patients and their families along with hospital staff. Iris Santiago’s daughter has spent a year at the hospital. She’s grateful for the performance and all the hospital has done for her daughter.
“I believe that the hospital they are very helpful,” Santiago told 22News. “I really like the hospital. My daughter really loves it. They helped her allot.”
On Thursday, two of the Shrine Circus’ biggest attractions spent the day primping for their first performance. Isla, the elephant, and her companion Kelly seemed to thoroughly enjoy getting a bath.
The elephants are more than 40 years old, and they work 40 weeks a year as circus attractions.
Their owner and trainer told 22News, he treats these Pachyderms like he treats his children.
“I spend more time with them than I do my children,” said Terry Frisco. “We give them like vegetables and bread all day, bring them outside, graze on the grass.”
Kelly and Isla will face the public during eight Melha Circus performances starting Thursday night through Sunday at the Eastern States Exposition.
When they’re not on the road performing, they rest at their trainers ranch in the mid-west
The circus will have performances open on the following dates:
- Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m.
- Friday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m.
- Saturday, May 5 at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.
- Sunday, May 6 at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Tickets for the show can be purchased by phone at 413-205-5087, at the Eastern States Coliseum box office, or at all western Massachusetts and Enfield Big Y stores.
Tickets purchased at Big Y stores will be eligible for a special promotion of buy three seats get one free.
