The Springfield Roman Catholic Diocese has promised to bring a satisfactory conclusion to the debris problem at St. Jerome Cemetery in Holyoke.

The cemetery has deposited the debris, including a mattress dumped in the cemetery almost a week ago, in an enclosure on the cemetery grounds. The enclosure also contains piles of wilted flowers from gravesides.

“The cemetery has had issues in the past,” Diocesan spokesman Mark Dupont explained. “We’ve been going through great lengths to address this. A new superintendents coming in. They’re bringing a large dumpster next week to try to get rid of the garbage that’s been dumped on our property.”

Dupont added that because of the number of daily burials at St. Jerome, the staff had been hard-pressed to provide enough attention to its other duties.
