Springfield emergency personnel bond with kids over fishing

Hampden County

Kids in Springfield learned about fishing Wednesday night as part of the “Cops and Bobbers, Hooks and Ladders” event at the South End Community Center.

Members of the Police and Fire Department teamed up with Mass. Wildlife and the Fish and Wildlife Service to practice casting and angling, ahead of the annual Elks Lodge Fishing Derby in Forest Park at the end of the month.

“We thought it was a really great way to combine an effort to get kids outside, get them connected to the outdoors, and also give them a sense of community working with the police officers and the fire department.”

The derby on April 28th is expected to draw hundreds of young fishers. Fishing poles will be provided.
