Preparations are underway in the city of Springfield, for yet another big weekend!

Mark Dorsey of Springfield told 22News, “This is a great thing. This is the greatest thing that’s happened to Springfield since Basketball Hall of Fame.”

Labor Day is the first holiday MGM Springfield will be open for and if you’re staying local this weekend you can expect to see people, and a lot of them!

MGM Springfield Spokesman Saverio Mancini told 22News more than 150,000 people came out for the grand-opening weekend of the resort. He also said that MGM’s hotel and restaurants were all fully booked and they’re expecting large crowds in the city for the holiday weekend.

With that comes traffic but some people in the area are happy to see the heavy volume.

“Traffics good, traffic means people are stopping in the city, they’re spending money in the city and the restaurants and things along those lines are collecting more money,” said Dorsey.

MGM Springfield will also be hosting Stevie Wonder on Saturday, for their first concert performed at the MassMutual Center which seats nearly 8,000 people and tickets sold fast!

Vice President of AAA, Pioneer Valley Sandra Marsian told 22News they’ve received a lot of calls from the eastern part of the state regarding where to stay or park when visiting MGM Springfield.

The greater Springfield convention and visitors bureau said there are still hotels available in the area if you’re planning to stay in western Massachusetts this Labor Day weekend.
