Exhaust system malfunction causes fire at Springfield cemetery

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield firefighters were called to put out a fire at a cemetery on Parker Street Tuesday afternoon. 

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News crews were called to the Hillcrest Park Cemetery located at 895 Parker Street, to find a small fire in the mechanical room around 3:26 p.m. 

Leger said the fire is at the crematorium. The fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries reported. It caused about $10,000 in damage. 

Investigators determined the cause to be an exhaust system malfunction.
