Springfield man killed in crash on Mass Pike in Charlton

Hampden County

A 51-year-old Springfield man was killed in an accident on the Mass Pike in Charlton early Thursday morning.

According to Massachusetts State Police Media Relations, the victim crashed his van into the back of a tractor trailer that was stopped in traffic near Exit 9, where construction was taking place.

The Chicopee man driving the tractor trailer was not injured.

According to state police, the preliminary investigation indicates the victim didn’t realize that traffic had stopped and crashed into the tractor trailer at highway speed.

Charlton Fire and EMS, Sturbridge Fire, and MassDOT were called to the accident Thursday morning to help Massachusetts State Police. Two citizens who stopped at the crash site also helped state troopers.

All lanes have been reopened. The victim’s identity is not being released until his family is notified.
