Springfield Police investigating incident involving off-duty captain

Hampden County

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Police Department is investigating a captain’s alleged involvement in an incident that took place in a Walmart parking lot over the weekend.

Springfield Police Department spokesperson Ryan Walsh told 22News Captain Richard Labelle was involved in an incident outside the Walmart on Boston Road Saturday night. He could not provide any more details about the investigation.

The city’s Mayor Domenic Sarno issued a statement Tuesday afternoon commending the acting police commissioner’s immediate investigation and actions on the issue.

I have charged Acting Commissioner Clapprood ‘to say what has to be said and do what has to be done,’ to restore our Police Department’s integrity and professionalism, in order to rid the Department of any potential unlawful and embarrassing actions and just as important, highlight all the good, brave and dedicated efforts put forth by the vast majority of our police officers, day in and day out. We will work with District Attorney Anthony Gulluni, our civilian Community Police Hearing Board (CPHB) and other authorities to complete a timely review and resolution of this incident ASAP.
