Springfield street named in honor of North End community activist

A street in Springfield’s North End has a new name Friday.

Jefferson Avenue was named in honor of Christine Williams, a longtime resident, and advocate for the North End.

Williams passed away 25 years ago, but her hard work was remembered at a ceremony with friends and family at Calhoun Park Friday.

Her daughter told 22News that Williams was the person people went to when they needed to get something done.

“She did a lot for the North End Community Center,” said Deli Williams. “She was on the North End Citizen Council. She was on the board of the PTA. And she was just a great woman. It’s heartwarming that they finally did something for her.”

She also served on a number of nonprofit boards, including the former Northern Educational Service and the Johnson Life Center.

Williams raised her family in a home right on Jefferson Avenue.
