Springfield students begin Ready Set Read program

Hampden County

The Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School of Excellence in Springfield kicked off its Ready Set Read program Tuesday evening.

The initiative encourages students to take part in a challenge to read for 20 minutes each day.

Local authors read to the students and the students led their own poetry slam!

“Making reading something that’s fun – like a fun activity; not just homework, not just something you have to do, but that you can get lost in it,” said Lynnette Johnson, a local author.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno spoke at Tuesday night’s event, on the importance of reading every day.
