Springfield will not launch its fireworks from Riverfront Park for this summer’s Fourth of July event.
The park is currently undergoing extensive renovations for Springfield’s 9/11 Memorial. Those renovations won’t be completed until the dedication on September 11.
Mayor Domenic Sarno told 22News that the fireworks display will be launched at a different site, which he’ll reveal in a few days.
The Spirit of Springfield will coordinate the fireworks display, as they do every year.
“That’s my favorite event,” Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt said. “I think the community looks forward to its every year. A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to go away like you and I. That is their Fourth of July, that’s their holiday, so I like to bring it to them.”
Matt promised that this year’s site will accommodate the more than 100,000 people expected to come to Springfield to see the July Fourth fireworks.
