Springfield’s Mental Health Association donated 15 bags of food to the Gray House Friday morning.
During their annual New Year Party, the MHA had the Gray House and Springfield families in mind.
In order for employees to attend the party, MHA asked them to bring nonperishable items for a food drive to benefit low-income families. Canned vegetables, fruits, pasta, soup and dozens of other items will now be going to homes in Springfield.
Executive Director of the Gray House Teresa Laberti said that with the cold weather and the recent Government shutdown, the donation couldn’t have come at a better time.
“The cold is a huge factor and with all the uncertainty around snap benefits people are still concerned about that,” said Laberti.
More than 45 percent of residents here live below the poverty line. Four times more than the statewide rate.
On average, the Gray House serves 80 to 120 households per week.
