Springfield Technical Community College is very excited to see their student learning commons finally be built.
Governor Charlie Baker, STCC staff, and other local and state leaders cut the ribbon Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the opening of the $50 million Ira H. Rubenzahl Student Learning Commons.
The 100,000 square foot renovated historic building will include administrative offices, student services, a bookstore, and much more.
“Our Rubenzahl Student Learning Commons really changes and gives us a heart for our campus,” STCC President Dr. John Cook told 22News. “Seventeen offices and student services under one roof, a significant day for us.”
“This project which has been in the works for a long time has a reuse of a really old facility which has tons of historic importance,” Gov. Baker said. “This is as good as it gets.”
The Student Learning Commons is inside Building 19, which was built in the 19th century as a warehouse to store gun barrel stocks for the Springfield Armory.
The Rubenzahl Student Learning Commons is named after former STCC President Ira Rubenzahl, who worked with Gov. Baker to get the state to fund the renovation project.
