Town meeting voters reject Hampden’s school restructuring proposal

Hampden County

Dozens of Hampden residents packed a church Monday night to decide whether they’ll be sending 7th and 8th graders to schools in Wilbraham starting next year.

Town Meeting voters rejected the school restructuring proposal. It would have required Hampden 8th graders to start attending Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham next fall, and 7th graders in 2022.

The Town of Hampden had sued the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District to keep them from closing the Burgess School. That lawsuit was settled in July, but residents want to keep Hampden students in Hampden.

The matter could be going back to court, but this issue will first go back to the select board.
