We’re nearly two months into a long-term bridge construction project that’s been tying up traffic between Agawam and West Springfield.
The Morgan Sullivan Bridge renovations started in January and won’t be complete until 2022. During phase one, travel has been reduced from four lanes down to two, with one lane in each direction on the right side of the bridge, heading from Agawam into West Springfield.
22News went to the bridge Tuesday evening where traffic was slightly backed up and being directed by police.
However, Mark Rodgers of Agawam told 22News the backups are worth it, “It needed to be done. I think Agawam P.D. is doing a great job keeping the traffic flowing. It’s a minor headache now and then but for the most part, I haven’t had any issues with it and I’ve been coming back and forth through this intersection for a month now.”
Rodgers told 22News he thinks the real problem will when the Big E returns to West Springfield.
Stage two of the project is set to begin in the fall of 2020 when the construction and deck replacement will shift to the other side.
