Traffic expected in Chicopee due to Great New England Air and Space Show

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Saturday is the first day of the Great New England Air and Space Show.

Westover is expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors both Saturday and Sunday to attend the Great New England Air and Space Show.

This year's air show theme "Wings of Heritage Shape the Future" marks the 70th anniversary of the United States Air Force Reserve.

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are leading a field of more than 20 different flying machines.

Other performers this weekend include the world famous Geico Skytypers and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team.

Westover said this air show serves as both an educational tool as well as a way to inspire the next generation of the air force

There's a chance for a thunderstorm today so you may want to bring with you a rain jacket with you or a small umbrella if you're coming to the air show Saturday.

Gates open at 8 a.m. with displays starting at 9 a.m., and flying demonstrations take off at 11 a.m.

Westover said the traffic will significantly increase by 11 a.m.

The base estimates once you get off the highway and through security, it'll take you about an hour until you reach the flightline.

Westover said there will be golf carts on base to help airshow visitors with free jump starts and lock outs, and trucks stationed along the Mass Pike, where cars might break down.

They expect most of their lots to be full by 2 o'clock today.
