A pile of trash caught fire in Springfield’s North End Thursday morning, sending heavy smoke into the sky until firefighters put out the flames.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that some trash that was on a garbage truck caught fire, and the driver dumped the burning load near 95 Fisk Avenue. The truck driver tried to put out the fire himself before firefighters got there, but he suffered burns to his arm and his neck.

The truck driver was treated for his injuries.
