Union officials urge Stop & Shop workers on strike to respect customers

Hampden County

Thousands of unionized Stop & Shop workers went on strike last week over what they say is an unfair contract proposal by Stop & Shop.

Some local residents who tried crossing their picket line reported rude behavior by union workers to police.

Greenfield Police had to ask protesters at the Stop & Shop on French King Highway to stop blocking the entrance this past weekend.

Union leaders said they want all of their members to be courteous and respectful throughout the strike.

“We depend on the customers and we are stressing to all of our members to respect the people who walk through the line,” Dean Ethier of UFCW Local 1459 told 22News. “These are the same customers we will be serving when we get through the contract negotiations.”

Ethier told 22News they welcome people to use the banks or pharmacies inside any of the Stop & Shops.

Contract negotiations continued on Tuesday, but he said there is still no end in sight for the strike.
