Valley Press Club dedicates scholarship award to late 22News colleague

Hampden County

The Valley Press Club awarded six $1000 scholarships on Saturday. Two with ties to 22News.

The Al Jaffe Award went to Rory Tettemer, the son of 22News anchor Rich Tettemer and his wife Val.

Al Jaffe is a broadcast legend who was awarded the first Valley Press Club Award in 1964 and is giving back.

Rory will study sports broadcasting at Emerson College, starting in the Fall.

The 22News sponsored Valley Press Club Scholarship went to West Springfield High School graduate Hailey MacDonald, who will begin her journalism studies at Western New England University in August.

This year’s 22News Scholarship was dedicated to the memory of our late and beloved colleague Mark Wiernasz.

We lost mark just about a year ago after he had dedicated more than 40 years of his life to a career at 22News.

As assignment manager, Mark shaped the news for decades. Mark’s widow Jeane and their two sons Peter and Matthew presented Hailey with her scholarship check and certificate.

Awards ceremony emcee Kathy Tobin paid tribute to Mark Wiernasz, saying that the entire time she worked at the competing station, she always respected Mark’s work, and his work ethic and she always wished he had been working for her station.

A tribute from a respected competitor.

Mark’s family said they miss him every day.

And so do we.
