West Springfield considering ban on single-use plastic bags

Hampden County

With so many retail stores on Riverdale Street and Memorial Ave, a number of shoppers could soon need to carry reusable bags in West Springfield.

Town Councilor Sean Powers submitted the proposed ordinance this week, saying a town-wide cleanup event encouraged him to push for a plastic bag ban.

If passed, it wouldn’t go into effect for one year to give businesses time to use the bags they have.

Powers included concessions for small businesses that could be financially impacted by having to make the switch.

“I’ve actually included in the ordinance two one-year exemption periods where you can apply to the town, say that it’s really difficult for you to switch over now,” said Powers.

The first public hearing on the ordinance will take place in April.
