West Springfield mosquitoes test positive for West Nile Virus

Hampden County

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The West Springfield Health Department has been notified that two groups of mosquitoes collected in town earlier this week have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

West Springfield Director of Public Health Jeanne Galloway told 22News it is highly recommended that residents take precautions when outdoors. This includes:

  • applying bug spray
  • being aware of peak mosquito hours (dusk to dawn)
  • wearing clothing that can help reduce bites (long sleeves, long pants, and socks)

To keep mosquitos away from your home, Galloway suggests:

  • draining standing water
  • installing or repairing window/door screens
