West Springfield Town Common filled with American flags

Hampden County

Six hundred and fifty American flags have been placed on the West Springfield Town Common in honor of Sunday’s Veterans Day observance.

It’s been three years since the West Springfield Lions Club started planting flags leading up to and through the Veterans Day observance.

22News spoke with West Springfield Mayor William Reichelt at the flag site.

“This has always been the place we gather for Memorial Day and Veterans Day to honor the fallen and honor the still-living veterans,” Reichelt said. “The [West Springfield] Lions Club, three years ago, came up to me and said ‘other communities do these flags, could we do it?’ I said ‘absolutely. Sounds great.'”

Every one of the 650 flags honors a West Springfield veteran. The flags will remain on the Town Common until the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

The Boy Scouts will then present each of these flags to their sponsor.
