The West Springfield town council overruled the mayor’s veto of their ban on recreational marijuana sales.
Monday night the West Springfield town council overruled the mayor’s veto of their ban on recreational marijuana sales. But some residents now want a town-wide vote.
The vote was overwhelming again Monday night.
The West Springfield town council voted eight to one to overrule Mayor Reichelt’s veto of their ban on legal marijuana sales. Only one councilor voted no.
Residents weren’t shy about expressing their frustration over recreational marijuana sales being banned in town.
Some residents even held signs that read “support the mayor, take a referendum vote.”
This was the mayor’s first-ever veto. He told 22News he wants a more in-depth look at how recreational marijuana could help the city.
He also said the town could benefit from the financial impact.
Mayor Reichelt said recreational marijuana could still be put to a town wide vote. It would take 2,000 signatures to put a pot question on a ballot.
