Western Massachusetts Fire Training Academy honors 24 new graduates

Hampden County

A lot of pride Friday night as 23 men and one woman graduated from the Massachusetts firefighting academy in Indian Orchard.

The procession for Friday’s firefighter graduation ceremony included the newest members of the fire departments in Springfield, Chicopee, Westfield, East Longmeadow, West Springfield and Longmeadow.

Friday’s experience took Longmeadow Fire Chief John Dearborn back to the day when he completed his training years ago.

“It’s the best career in the world, the opportunity to help people every day, my career every day, it’s been something different, said Chief Dearborn.

Family members and veteran firefighters were there to welcome the 24 who had just recently completed their ten weeks of training at the Massachusetts firefighting academy in Springfield’s Indian Orchard neighborhood.

“Three-quarters of the department is here today. To exchange from the graduation to participate in the event,” Chief Paul Morrissette of the East Longmeadow Fire Department told 22News.

Family members had come as far away as Auburn in Worcester County and Pittsfield in Berkshire County to welcome the newest firefighters to protect their communities from this day forward.
