Westfield State University is providing a local organization with a weekly gift of thirty full meals for families in need.
The first food donation was picked up by a Rachel’s Table volunteer at the Westfield State University dining commons Thursday.
Rachel’s Table, an arm of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts, provides donated food to food pantries throughout the greater Springfield area.
Westfield State University Sophomore Brandon Sullivan came up with the idea of the dining commons donating the food instead of throwing it out.
Jodi Falk, Director of Rachel’s Table, told 22News, “This is the first time we’ve ever done it. We have seven large containers of food, vegetables, starch, things that people need.”
Falk told 22News she hopes that similar arrangements can be made with other colleges in the area because of the great need for donated food.
