World War II veteran celebrates her 100th birthday

Hampden County

It’s not every day that a Holyoke Soldiers Home resident celebrates their 100th Birthday.

World War II veteran Agnes Bannish cut the cake at the party in her honor attended by members of her family and her fellow Soldiers Home residents Wednesday afternoon.

Agnes, a native of Hadley, joined the army in 1943 as a medical technician. Her son attended the party as well as one of her brothers.

Wednesday’s Soldiers Home celebration made quite an impression on this centenarian.

“I’m very excited, they’re doing so much for me,” said Agnes. “You have to be 100 to get a party like this.”

Agnes Bannish joins three other residents as members of the 100 club at the Holyoke Soldiers Home.

She was pleased with congratulate proclamations from Governor Baker, Congressman Neal, and Senator Elizabeth Warren.
