The Greater Springfield YMCA is pulling up stakes from its 60-year home on Chestnut Street and relocating downtown.

The YMCA wellness and child care centers will relocate this summer to Tower Square on Main Street in the heart of downtown.

YMCA president and CEO Dexter Johnson told 22News, this is a perfect opportunity to bring the Y and its 2,000 members closer to a thriving downtown.

“We’ll have a great child care facility downstairs for young people and families, and a great fitness center downtown overlooking the street there with a glass front,” Johnson said. “It’ll be beautiful.”

The YMCA is launching a capital campaign to defray the cost of extensive Tower Square renovations to accommodate their move this August.

The YMCA has put its longtime home and parking lot on Chestnut Street up for sale.
