Driving over the tracks when the gates are down, whether a train is coming or not, is dangerous and illegal.
A 22News viewer sent us a video of cars driving around the lowered railroad crossing gates on Saturday. The gates had been repaired by early Saturday night.
CSX didn’t say what caused the gates to go down Saturday, but they said the operation of the crossing could be affected by extreme weather conditions like heavy rain or snow. They encourage residents to report any railroad crossing issues immediately.
“First I’d wait,” West Hartford resident Nick Dugan told 22News. “Safety should be the most utmost importance I would think. If there are no first responders there, hopefully, someone would take initiative. I don’t think someone should just go around.”
CSX said you should always assume a train is coming when the gates are down since trains can run on any track, in any direction, at any time.
MassDOT will soon be installing “railroad crossing warning signs” on streets around the Front Street railroad crossing. They hope to have the signs operational this summer.
