AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Hampshire College is making more cuts amid the school’s financial crisis.
Twenty-four staff members were notified over the last week that their positions would be eliminated by June 30th.
The college also laid off nine staff members earlier this year, in addition to reducing next year’s faculty salary budget by around 45 percent.
The college said this was made possible by many faculty members voluntarily cutting their own hours, retiring, or taking leaves of absence to teach as visitors at one of the other five colleges.
Despite the restructuring, Hampshire is no longer looking for a long-term strategic partner. The college’s board voted this month to remain independent and focus on a major fundraising campaign.
Hampshire’s president said the school needs to raise $15 to $20 million over the next year.
