An 18-year-old man from Belchertown was killed in a crash Tuesday morning after state police say he sped away from a police officer.

Massachusetts State Police Media Relations identified the victim as 18-year-old Brendan Conroy.

According to Massachusetts State Police Media Relations, Granby police received a report of a Nissan Xterra that was being driven erratically at around midnight. A police officer spotted the SUV heading northbound on Route 202, but the driver did not stop and sped away.

State police say the driver then lost control of the vehicle and crashed. He died at the site of the accident, which was near the corner of Route 202 and Lyman Street.

The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Services Section, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are still looking into the cause of the crash.
