480lb black bear euthanized in Ware

Hampshire County

WARE, Mass. (WWLP) – A 480-pound black bear was euthanized in Ware earlier this week.

Massachusetts Environmental Police spokesperson Katie Gronendyke told 22News environmental police were notified Tuesday afternoon about a bear acting aggressively toward horses in town.

A 22News viewer sent us a photo of the bear’s encounter with her mother’s horse on River Road (above).

Gronendyke said when environmental police and MassWildlife got there, the bear was unresponsive and was put down due to concern of public safety and the possibility of a rabies infection.

Environmental police are continuing to look into the cause of the bear’s behavior.
